Korba: Sunita Bai, 39, whose life was deeply impacted by unbearable hip pain, has now experienced a complete transformation. For the past two years, Sunita struggled with walking, sitting, and numerous hospital visits yielded no relief. Eventually, she found hope when a friend informed her about successful joint replacement surgery for hips at New Korba Hospital (NKH). With renewed optimism, Sunita and her family visited NKH where they consulted with orthopedic surgeon Dr. S. Chandani, specializing in bone diseases. After necessary examinations, Dr. Chandani recommended avascular necrosis (AVN) surgery for Sunita’s right hip. With consent from Sunita and her family, the surgery was scheduled.
Specialist Dr. Chandani and her team successfully performed complete right hip replacement surgery on Sunita, which lasted just an hour. Within two days of the operation, Sunita began walking again. After six days, she was discharged from the hospital. During discharge, bone disease specialist Dr. Avinash Singh advised Sunita on some exercises, which she followed diligently. Now, she is completely healthy, walking and sitting comfortably without any issues. Sunita and her family expressed gratitude to Dr. Chandani and her team for the successful surgery. Availability of such facilities in Korba district is a significant achievement, benefiting local residents immensely. This success has not only given Sunita a new lease on life but also sparked hope for other patients facing similar challenges.
What is Avascular Necrosis (AVN)?
Avascular necrosis is a disease caused by temporary or permanent damage to the blood supply of bones, usually affecting the heads of long bones. It occurs when blood supply to the bone is obstructed, leading to inadequate delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the affected bone areas. Consequently, the bone tissue in the affected parts undergoes necrosis (death).
Over 100 Successful Joint Replacements at NKH
Dr. S. Chandani, Director of NKH, mentioned that previously, patients from the district had to travel to other cities for hip joint replacements. Now, with these facilities available locally, major operations are performed at NKH, reducing costs significantly for patients. Over 100 successful hip, shoulder, and knee joint replacements have been performed at NKH. In recent months, half a dozen THR surgeries have been successfully conducted.
